Finding the perfect toilet seat for your needs.

When it comes to replacing a toilet seat on an older toilet, you may have some difficulties finding the perfect seat. A lot of manufactures may have discontinued the particular color/ style you may need.

Simply going to your local home center may prove to be a waste of time and money. Here is a tip you can use to help determine what seat will best fit your needs, please see below:

First, determine who makes that toilet you currently have. The name is usually printed on the toilet.

Carefully remove the tank lid off the tank, inside you should find a series of numbers and or letters.

Write this information down, it will help the manufacturer determine what color and style toilet you have.

Once you have this information, you will have to call the manufacturer directly;

I have provided a phone list of the top manufacturers for you.
Kohler 800-456-4537
American Standard 800-442-1902
Crane Plumbing 800-546-5476
Eljer Plumbing 800-423-5537

When a manufacturer stops production on a toilet seat colors or styles, they will usually sell the molds to third party companies who will continue to produce the items under their own label. If the manufacturer tells you they no longer make the seat, ask them if they have a Church or Bemis equivalent model number. If not. You may still be able to purchase a seat from Church or Bemis.

Too find more information on Church or Bemis please see the links I have provided.http://www.bemisseats.com/catalog/retail/?cat=colors or http://www.churchseats.com/

This method has proven successful for a lot of my clients. Its may not solve every seat situation, but in most cases it will. If you have a uniquely colored seat, you may want to consider buying an extra toilet seat and storing it away just in case. Good luck,

Kitchen Sink bowls

Kitchen sinks are available in one bowl, two bowl, or three bowl models. The bowls can be deep or shallow, and have straight or sloped sidewalls. When deciding on the number and type of bowls you will need, think of how you are planning to use your sink.

Single bowl sinks are basic, but can be purchased with a depth of up to 10” or 12”. If you plan on using your sink primarily for rinsing dishes to prepare them for the dishwasher, then a single-bowl sink will probably meet your needs.

Two and three bowl sinks allow for multi-tasking. You can rinse or store dishes in the large bowl, and use the small bowl for a garbage disposal or to rinse vegetables.Bowls are available in different depths. Extra-deep bowls are great for soaking larger pots and roasters, but reduce the amount of space under your counter and may be troublesome for your back on a daily basis. Shallower bowls are great for rinsing vegetables or supporting garbage disposals. Bowl depths range from 5” to 12”.

The placement of the drain in bowls varies. The most common is a center-drain. Some bowls areThe placement of the drain in bowls varies. The most common is a center-drain. Some bowls are available with a rear-positioned drain. offers more usable bowl space, and since the plumbing underneath is set further back, it also adds the benefit of additional under-counter cabinet storage.

Selecting a Kitchen sink

Selecting your kitchen sink can be one of the most important decisions you make when remodeling your kitchen. Obviously your appliances play an integral role, however everything stems from the sink. That is where you wash and prep your foods and finish off your cooking experience. Selecting the right sink is very important and shouldn’t be rushed.

Most manufacturers make similar styles and shapes, but what you should be looking for is the features and benefits of each. Selecting a deep sink will be important if you use large pots. It gives you the added dept to fit a large pasta pot in the sink.Stainless steel sinks are probably the most versatile sinks when it comes to accenting your décor. Stainless steel is a neutral finish and works well in any kitchen. Do some research and continue checking out my blog for helpful tips and suggestions.

By shopping online you can choose from a variety of different styles and finishes that may not be available locally. Tips for designing your new kitchen

Eat, drink and be happy. Those three little words can apply to many things, however in this case they refer to your kitchen design. You can spend thousands of dollars trying to create your ultimate kitchen, only to be frustrated with some of your decisions later. Before sitting down with a Kitchen Designer, I recommend doing some research on appliances, cabinets and fixtures ahead of time. This way you can present your ideas and ultimately have more input on the outcome of your kitchen. The Internet offers a tremendous amount of information for you to utilize. Sites like www.HomeCenter.com provide product information, specifications and discounts directly to the consumer. This not only allows you to save money, but also become more informed on the products that are available.

As a homeowner, you have a responsibility to your family as well as yourself to make the right decisions on your design and product selection. Don’t allow a designer to dictate what your kitchen should look like, rather utilize their knowledge and your research to create the kitchen you want. Take a step back and look at your current kitchen, determine what you like and dislike about it and write those things down. This will help you figure out what works and what needs improvement. Ask yourself the following questions:

1) Do you like where the sink is positions?
2) Do you like where the appliances are positioned?
3) Do you have enough draw space?
4) Do you have enough storage space?
5) Do you want Undercounter lighting?

These are just some of the questions you should ask yourself. The answers may help to determine your layout and design. Remodeling a kitchen can very exciting as well as frustrating. When selecting your cabinets, make sure your inquire about lead times especially on special order manufacturers. The last thing you want is a delay in receiving your material. With proper planning and a good designer you can eat, drink and be happy in your new kitchen.

Quick and Easy Ways to Update Your Bathroom

You can spruce up a dated bathroom without having to incur the cost of a remodel. Most projects can be complete over the course of a weekend and not only give you the look you want, but also be fun to do. We all watch the shows on TV where they reinvent rooms for under a $1000.00; however we don’t all have the luxury of a professional designer, contractor and access to a $1000.00. But with a few simple tips, you can accomplish a lot with very little.

Start off by giving you bathroom a good cleaning, remove old shower curtains, pictures, towels and nick knacks that may be lying around.

Now you need to decide what direction you want to go in, do you want to change the color? If so you can usually get a can of paint and supplies for under $40.00. Most bathrooms will only require a one gallon can. Paint is the quickest and easiest way to change the look of the bathroom.

Another quick and easy upgrade is your light fixture. You can purchase a nice light fixture in most Home Centers for under $30.00. Add a couple of bright bulbs and you bathroom will really shine. Just make sure to turn off the power before you disconnect the existing fixture.

After you have painted and installed the light. Treat your self to lunch and head over to your local Bed Bath and Beyond or similar outlet and purchase some new towels. You will find a huge selection, but try to find something that accents your new paint job. While in the store, look at bath rugs to compliment the towels, this will add a nice look to the bathroom. You may also want to consider new sink top accessories like a garbage can, tooth brush holder and soap dish. All these items should fall under $100.00 depending on how many towels you select.
A picture will add a nice finishing touch to this project.

After you’re down cleaning up and placing your new items, stand back and admire your work. Doesn’t it look nice? I like to take before and after pictures, they help to boost your confidence for the next project and it’s also nice to look back and appreciate what you have done.

If you added up your receipts, you will be amazed how much you accomplished and you probably spent under $250.00. Not bad to upgrade room you use everyday.

Selecting the right amount of faucet holes for you sink

If you are installing a self-rimming (drop-in) sink then you will have an option for the number of holes you would like the sink to come with. The number of holes you should choose depends on the type of faucet and accessories you are planning to install. You can purchase a faucet that requires one hole (single-handle), or three holes (separate hot and cold handle). However, if you are planning on purchasing an accessory as well, such as a side spray (vegetable spray), soap dispenser, or hot water dispenser keep; in mind they require a hole as well. Below is a chart of hole options and what they can be used for.

One hole: Allows for a faucet with a single lever handle (no separate hot and cold handles).

Two Holes: Allows for a faucet with a single lever handle (no separate hot and cold handles) and an option of a side spray, soap dispenser, hot water dispenser, or chilled water dispenser.

Three Holes: Allows for a faucet with separate hot and cold handles OR a single lever handle faucet with an option of two of the following accessories, side spray, soap dispenser, hot water dispenser, or chilled water dispenser.

Four Holes: Allows for a faucet with separate hot and cold handles and an option of a side spray, soap dispenser, hot water dispenser, or chilled water dispenser.

Five Holes: Allows for a faucet with separate hot and cold handles with an option of two of the following accessories, side spray, soap dispenser, hot water dispenser, or chilled water dispenser.

Most undermount sinks do not come with faucet hole options. When installing an undermount the faucet holes are drilled directly into the counter top just behind the sink.

Kitchen Sink Installation types

The installation of the sink can make a substantial difference in the overall look and functionality of it. Below are descriptions of the most popular installation types available today.

Self-rimming, drop-in – These sinks have traditionally been the most common in the kitchen. They are mounted from above the counter and have a built-in visible rim on which the faucet sits. These sinks work well with any countertop material but have a raised lip that may, depending on the sink material you choose, interfere with cleaning.

Undermount, recessed – These sinks are the most popular for their glamorous appeal and superior functionality. They are installed from underneath the counter and do not have a rim, so food and debris can be wiped directly into the sink. Any solid surface countertop of manmade material, natural stone or concrete will allow for an under-mounted sink installation.

Tile-in, tile-edge – These sinks have a “tile-in” edge. They are designed to mount flush with a tiled surface and offer a built-in, grouted sink edge.

Apron or farmhouse sinks – These sinks are becoming increasingly popular as many homeowners are going for a traditional farmhouse look in their kitchen. They have exposed decorative face panels and must be planned for early in your kitchen design because they have special cabinet requirements. See your cabinet fabricator before purchasing an apron or farmhouse sink.
